23:24 NFL To Expand Automatic Replay Rules In 2012? - Pride Of Detroit

The NFL's replay system provides a lot of moments of frustration because of how the rules are set up. That was especially true in Week 17 when the Detroit Lions were playing the Green Bay Packers. The Lions were on the wrong side of some really questionable calls involving fumbles, one of which was correctly overturned after Jim Schwartz challenged it. A second questionable call involving a fumble was somehow upheld, and just like that the Lions were out of challenges in the first half.

This proved to be costly because of what happened later in the first half. Matthew Stafford found Titus Young in the back corner of the end zone, and Young made an outstanding catch for what appeared to be a touchdown. The official near the end zone ruled the pass incomplete, however. The Lions were unable to challenge the call, and since it wasn't a scoring play, there was no automatic review. The rule made little sense considering it was clearly a touchdown, and this particular play may have sparked some change going forward.

This offseason, the NFL may change the rules again so that not only scoring plays but also plays in the end zone that aren’t ruled a touchdown or safety on the field get reviewed.

"Whether you scored or you didn’t score, should we review that automatically?" Goodell said.

To answer Roger Goodell's question, yes, the play should be reviewed. Just because the Lions were out of challenges doesn't mean they should have been screwed out of a touchdown on an obviously blown call, especially when the call would have been reviewed if the official had ruled it a catch.

While nothing has officially been changed yet about this rule, Goodell said the NFL competition committee will review the issue during the offseason.

23:24 Matthew Stafford For Backup Kicker? - Pride Of Detroit

Shortly after Detroit Lions kicker Jason Hanson suffered an injury in 2010 against the New York Jets, defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh was called upon to kick an extra point. Suh, who grew up playing soccer, showed off his leg to coaches during training camp and was therefore considered to be the backup kicker. Unfortunately, with a limited time to warm up, Suh clanked the kick off the right upright.

This year, the Lions luckily didn't have to deal with an injury to Hanson during a game. After their bye week he did have stitches in one of his knees, and with his status up in the air, punter Ryan Donahue tried his hand at kicking during a practice. Unfortunately, he injured himself in the process and missed the rest of the season, and Hanson turned out to be fine for the game anyway.

If a situation ever comes up again where the Lions need a new kicker in the middle of a game, perhaps quarterback Matthew Stafford could be of some help. At the NFL Experience in Indianapolis, he was bet by a friend that he couldn't kick a 40-yard field goal. He accepted the challenge and actually nailed the kick. NFL Network has video of the successful kick, as well as video of their interview with Stafford. You can check it out here.

23:24 Detroit Lions Raise Ticket Prices For Next Season - Pride Of Detroit

For the first time in five years, the Detroit Lions are raising ticket prices. Tom Lewand, the Lions' president, announced the rise in prices on Friday. Here are the basics on what will be changing and by how much:

"Most everyone will see a price increase this year," he said. "Most of them are about four or five percent, 30,000 seats are four to five percent, a few are higher than that, like our $90 seats at the 50-yard line go to $99. So, on average, it will go up just under eight percent at 7.9 percent."

According to Lewand, even with the change the Lions will rank around 23rd or 24th in the NFL in average ticket prices. That's not bad for a team coming off of a playoff run.

I'm sure many fans will not be thrilled with the change, but it was really an inevitable move. The Lions hadn't raised ticket prices in a while, and in fact, they were one of only three teams in the last three years that didn't up their average ticket price, according to Tim Twentyman. Considering fans do actually have a team worth paying to watch now, I don't have an issue with the increase.

If you're interested, you can check out the phone message from Lewand to Lions season-ticket holders that went out on Friday. (Via the Free Press)

13:13 On Paper: Super Bowl XLVI: New England Patriots Vs. New York Giants - Pride Of Detroit
Photo

Welcome back, everybody. I apologize for my three-week hiatus, but I guess that's what the first playoff appearance (and loss) in 12 years will do to us die-hards. For the second consecutive year, I have decided to preview the biggest game of the season the only way I know how: On Paper.

For those of you unfamiliar with my style of previews, last year's Super Bowl post has an overview of the purpose of these previews and a guide to the charts. Here's a snippet:

"On Paper" focuses on a few important stats to predict the outcome in many phases of the games. The key aspect of my previews is a focus on past game performances but taking into account the strength of the opponent. For example, a team that allows 270 passing yards in a game is seemingly having a bad day. However, if that game is against the Saints, who average around 277 passing yards a game, the defense actually did a somewhat good job holding the Saints below this average. These previews focus on such statistics that mostly go unnoticed.

The only difference from last year's style is that I have now added yellow to my charts. A yellow cell signifies that the team performed within 5% of the opposition's average.

Anyway, I will try and add some interesting statistics along the way that you can use to impress the other people at your Super Bowl party. Enjoy.

Patriots Pass Offense (2nd) vs. Giants Pass Defense (29th)

Patriots Offense:

Patriots_pass_o_medium

As you can see, Tom Brady and the New England offense have only been held below the defense's yardage average once this season. As a result, Brady put up a whopping 5,235 yards in the regular season, good for second-most all-time.

In addition, Brady has been very efficient throwing the ball. He was only held below defensive passer rating averages in three games and finished the season with a 105.6 passer rating (third overall). Despite the lack of a classic "number one" receiver, the Patriots lead the league in passing plays over 20 yards (72) and rank fifth in plays of 40 yards or more (14).

Brady has put up fairly modest touchdown and interception numbers (by his standards). His 39 regular season touchdowns is his second most, but is way behind his career-best 50 touchdowns in 2007. He threw 12 interceptions this year, three times as many as he threw last year. However, "modest" Brady is as good as any other quarterback out there.

Giants defense:

Giants_pass_d_medium

The Giants pass defense looks weak when looking at yardage stats. Opponents surpassed their yardage averages in 13 of 19 games against the Giants. But when looking at a team's defensive performance, it is important to look beyond yardage, which is why passer rating is always included in these charts. The defense looks a lot more impressive looking at the right side of the chart. The Giants held opponents below their passer rating average in 11 of 19 games. The results suggest that the Giants forfeit a lot of yards, but are somewhat opportunistic and prevent touchdowns and force interceptions.

Looking at the raw stats, we see this is true. The Giants' 20 interceptions rank them tied for sixth in the NFL (although their 28 passing touchdowns allowed is seventh-most). As a team, the Giants are allowing a passer rating of 86.1, which ties them for 20th in the league. Overall, it's fair to say the Giants' pass defense is average or slightly below average.

It's clear that this matchup favors the Patriots, but the significance of this advantage depends on two unknown factors. First is the health of Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski. Gronkowski led all tight ends in the regular season with 17 touchdowns, and placed second in yardage (behind Jimmy Graham). He is the leading Patriots receiver in the postseason in receptions, yardage and touchdowns. Gronkowski has been the focus of many during the last few weeks, but his importance cannot be overstated. Just look at his postseason stats compared to everyone else on the Patriots:

Gronkowski: 15 catches, 232 yards, 3 TDs

Everyone else: 33 catches, 370 yards, 3 TDs

This is coming from a team that is known for its ability to spread the ball around. Gronkowski has been essential to this offense lately. The latest injury reports suggest Gronk will play but his effectiveness is still unknown.

The second major factor of this matchup will be the Patriots' ability to keep the pocket clean. The Patriots have only allowed 32 sacks (ninth-best), but the Giants boast the third-most sacks in the league with 48. When the two previously met, the Giants got to Brady twice and eventually won the game. Therefore, I am only giving the Patriots a modest +1.5 advantage in this matchup.

Patriots Run Offense (20th) vs. Giants Run Defense (19th)

Patriots offense:

Patriots_run_o_medium

The Patriots are pretty much average across the board in run offense. They surpassed yardage averages in seven games, met averages in three, and were held below in eight. In yards per carry averages, they surpassed in five games, met in five and were held below in eight. When it comes to overall stats the Patriots are right around the league average in YPC (4.0, 21st). Interestingly, the Patriots are third in rushing touchdowns (18) but are not a long-play threat. They only have five rushing plays of 20+ yards (31st) and no rushing plays of 40+ yards (obviously, last). In other words, they are an effective red-zone rushing team but aren't a threat to break a long one.

Giants defense:

Giants_run_d_medium

The Giants counter with a similarly underwhelming run defense. They've held six of 19 opponents below yardage averages and only eight of 19 below YPC averages. In the past two weeks, in particular, the Giants have had a tough time stopping the run, allowing a combined 297 yards and 5.8 a carry.

Overall, I don't expect the Patriots run offense to take over this game by any means. However, when the Patriots get into Giants territory, they will not shy away from trying to punch it in against the Giants' front four. The Giants have allowed the seventh-most rushing touchdowns (15) and I wouldn't be surprised to see them allow another one or two on Sunday. But a touchdown isn't enough to give this advantage to either team. Draw.

Giants Pass Offense (5th) vs. Patriots Pass Defense (31st)

Giants Offense:

Giants_pass_o_medium

I know Lions fans don't want to hear it, but Eli Manning had himself a heck of a year (dare I say ... Pro Bowl worthy ... please don't hurt me). Only one opponent managed to hold him below their season average in yardage. But that opponent was ... the New England Patriots, who were the only team to hold the Giants below averages in both yardage and passer rating.

But you cannot deny how impressive the Giants pass offense has been. They rank sixth in passer rating (92.9), third in yards per attempt (8.4), and sixth in touchdowns (29).

Of course, a lot of Eli's success has been as a result of Victor Cruz's breakout season. Cruz finished the season third in receiving yards (1,536) and sixth in touchdowns (nine). He has been just as effective in the postseason, accumulating 244 yards (though he has yet to reach the end zone).

Patriots defense:

Patriots_pass_d_medium

The Patriots pass defense has garnered a lot of attention for being especially bad. Upon first looks of this chart, it appears to corroborate that story line -- all but three opponents surpassed their passing yard average. But, once again, looking at the passer rating column we see that the Patriots pass defense actually held nearly half of their opponents (eight of 18) at or below their passer rating average.

In fact, the notion that the Patriots' pass defense ranks as one of the worst in history is ludicrous. They aren't even in the bottom five this season. They rank 23rd in completion percentage allowed, 22nd in touchdowns allowed and 20th in completion percentage allowed. For all of the heat that the Patriots are taking, they actually have allowed the exact same passer rating as the Giants. Let me repeat that: The New England Patriots defense, which some are calling the worst in NFL Super Bowl history, have allowed the EXACT SAME passer rating as the New York Giants. If you really think the Patriots have one of the worst pass defenses in league history, let me introduce you to the 2008 Detroit Lions.

That being said, the Patriots pass defense is below average at best. With the Giants pass offense rolling, it's easy to see who has the advantage in this matchup. Though the Patriots have a better pass offense than the Giants, New England also has a worse pass defense. The Giants get a slightly bigger advantage because there are fewer questions surrounding their offense (and injuries) at this point. Giants +2.0.

Giants Run Offense (32nd) vs. Patriots Run Defense (17th)

Giants offense:

Giants_run_o_medium

Like their season, the Giants run offense has been a story of two different halves. In the first eight games, the Giants failed to surpass averages in yardage or YPC in any game. However, in the past four games, the Giants managed 458 yards and a respectable 4.0 a carry (against three top 10 run defenses, no less). Their running game has sparked at the right time, but it remains to be seen whether they can keep it up against the Patriots.

Patriots defense:

Patriots_run_d_medium

The Patriots have held 11 of 18 opponents below rushing yardage averages and six of 18 below YPC averages. Overall, they've been an average run defense. They rank 24th in yards per carry allowed (4.6) and 19th in rushing touchdowns forfeited (13). They've given up 10 rushes of 20+ yards (t-10th) and one rush of 40+ yards (t-7th). In other words, the Patriots run defense doesn't win or lose the game for them.

I think it is fair to say that the Giants will probably perform somewhere near their rushing averages this game. Though they rank last in total yardage, they seem to have hit their stride as of late. Therefore, I don't expect the Giants to abandon the run at any point in the game, and they will probably get around 85-95 yards total. In other words, this matchup is a draw.

Overall

The total advantage comes out Giants +0.5. Before I started compiling the data for this game, I couldn't figure out who I'd pick in this game. I have no allegiance to either team (in fact, both of these teams are among my least favorite in the league). Upon all of this research, I'm still very unsure of myself. The teams are incredibly similar. Both have top five passing attacks, weak pass defenses and rushing games that are somewhat average and inconsequential.

I'm not one for the "hot team" argument, but it's hard to deny how much better the Giants are playing now than they have all season. Granted, the Patriots are also riding a 10-game winning streak. But the charts are the charts and it's all the evidence I need to make a pick on an extremely close matchup. Giants 27, Patriots 24.

06:24 Two Former Lions Linemen Make It To Super Bowl - Pride Of Detroit

During training camp, one of the more bizarre stories was the exit of offensive tackle Tony Ugoh. He was expected to be a solid depth player on the offensive line, but he suddenly left the team in the middle of camp. There was some talk that he was planning to retire, but he turned up in December with the New York Giants and is now in Indianapolis for the Super Bowl. During media day earlier in the week, he was asked about what happened in Detroit and addressed a rumor about a "meltdown" during a team meeting.

"There wasn't any dust-up in a meeting," said Ugoh, a five-year veteran signed by the Lions in 2010 but never played. "I just had some personal issues I had to take care of. I had to take care of myself first and that's the decision (to leave the Lions) I had to make."

Offensive guard Donald Thomas exited the Lions when he was released during the final round of roster cuts. While he was a solid depth player on the offensive line, the Lions went in a different direction and let him go. He ended up landing with the New England Patriots, and he is also in Indianapolis for the Super Bowl. This week, he talked about his exit from the Lions and his time in Detroit.

"No bad feelings," he said. "Detroit gave me a chance last year to be on the team and I'm thankful for that, and just thankful that I got another opportunity to play."

Since Ugoh and Thomas are on opposing teams, one former Lions lineman is guaranteed to be walking away with a Super Bowl title on Sunday.

06:24 Decision 2012: Left Tackle For The Lions - Pride Of Detroit

(Ed. note: Bumped to the front page.)

When I started thinking about this offseason, I realized that the Lions may be at a vital and historic decision for the upcoming season. Who will be the left tackle and provide the protection that the pass happy Lions need for their outstanding QB?

This has not been a worry for the Lions organization for 11 years, although it has been a subject of intense debate among the fan base for much of that time. I'll present the options available, their positive and negatives, and then how I think the Lions should address this issue.

THE OPTIONS

1. Bring back Jeff Backus - Backus has been the rock of this O-line for 11 straight years. Never missing a start and hardly missing a snap during that time. He has been a better than average LT throughout his career, but never the dominant, franchise LT that Lions fans have been clamoring for. He is a free agent who currently has a cap hit of $7 million (10th among all tackles) for 2011. I think he could be re-signed for around $5 million per year, which is projected to be around 20th in the NFL among all tackles.

610x_medium

+ves - A steady, reliable pass protector who was playing some of the best football of his career during the second half of the season. Only gave up one sack after week seven. Looked good run blocking as well.

-ves - He was injured at the beginning of the season and was injured in the fourth quarter of the wild card game. He will be 35 years old in August 2012 with a lot of hard miles on his body.

2. Draft a replacement in round one in 2012 - The Lions choose at No. 23 this year and there will may be some (a) left tackle candidates available when they pick. In my view, the most likely OT available will be Mike Adams from Ohio State. The other LT candidates who could start immediately (Kalil, Reiff, and Martin) will likely be gone. If the Lions really want to target a starting LT they may have to move up.

Ncf_u_adams01_200_medium

+ves - This could be the new cornerstone of the O-line and provide blind side protection for Stafford for the next decade. Not to mention improved run blocking. Less costly alternative (less than $2 million per year than Backus or an FA).

-ves - The guy could be a bust and severely hamper the Lions offense. The Lions may have to give up multiple draft picks to trade up to get the guy they want.

3. Pick up a free agent left tackle - The three LTs who may be available are all coming off serious injuries (Gaither, D. Bell, and Max Starks) and will cost more than Backus. They are all younger, but not as reliable. I like Demetrius Bell from Buffalo as the best value among these three.

Terrell_suggs_demetrius_bell_buffalo_bills_ly1brdj_ylyl_medium

+ves - At least five years younger than Backus and all have shown they are at least above average LTs.

-ves - More expensive and less reliable than Backus (everyone is).

4. Promote from within - Give the job to the better of Corey Hilliard and Jason Fox. I really don't like this option at all. Hilliard is a barely passable right tackle and Fox has not been able to stay healthy through the preseason or practices. And I am not considering Gosder Cherilus, as he seems to be having enough trouble on the right side.

5. Trade? - I don't think even Martin Mayhew can get a decent LT in a trade, not to mention what he would have to give up and pay the guy. I don't think any team would trade a passable left tackle.

So, out of these options I believe that the Lions will re-sign Jeff Backus for two years and make a decision on whether Jason Fox can step up by 2013 during the 2012 season. That is dependent on Backus signing for a reasonable amount and that he makes a full recovery from his injury in the wild card game. I still believe he has a year or two in the tank, enough for the Lions to prepare for a succession in 2013.

I would love to hear what the rest of you think and will respond to all questions or comments.
